A boulevard is lit at three scales at once and they have almost nothing to do with each other. There is the city scale — the signature masts and the towers, which are what the place looks like in a photograph. There is the human scale — the step you are about to put your foot on, the bollard at knee height, the tree you walk under — which is what the place feels like at eleven at night in August. And there is the maintenance scale, which is whether any of it still works in three years in a climate that is hard on everything. The package described here is the second and third of those.

The Boulevard

Everything Below the Signature Pieces

01 / 02
The Boulevard

The sculptural masts down the centre of the boulevard are bespoke pieces designed for this scheme and are not catalogue items — and it is worth being clear that the heavy stone cylinders in the foreground are hostile-vehicle and traffic bollards, not luminaires. What the catalogue supplies is the layer that makes the boulevard walkable underneath all of that. RL-BL3289 is the lit bollard: D108 round, available at 400, 600 or 800mm, which matters because a boulevard changes level and a single height would be wrong somewhere along it. The finish is the useful part — grey, black, timber-effect or customisable, which is how a bollard gets matched to stone-clad street furniture rather than imposed on it. RL-IG1817 handles the trees set in paving: 304 stainless, IP65, with 10°, 30°, 45° and 60° optics from one housing, so a narrow beam can take a slender trunk and a wide one can fill a canopy without two different castings buried in the same granite. The façade lighting on the retail frontages belongs to each building, and the illuminated signage is the tenants'.

Waterfront Promenade

A Line You Can Put Your Foot On

02 / 02
Waterfront Promenade

The steps down to the water are the best piece of lighting on the promenade and the simplest. RL-ST360 runs continuously in the nosing of every tread — a silicone neon section rather than a strip in an aluminium profile, which is the right call outdoors on a public edge: there is no channel to fill with sand, no end cap to lift, and the section is IP67 and flexible enough to follow a long shallow radius without faceting. Lit from the nosing rather than from a post, the tread itself becomes the thing you can see, which is the whole safety argument for step lighting and is usually achieved far less elegantly. RL-SP3015 uplights the palms in the planted margin: a spike-mounted adjustable spot at 15°, 24° or 38°, which is the fitting to use in soft landscaping rather than an inground, because a bed gets re-planted and a spike can be moved with a trowel where a buried housing cannot. One specification caveat worth putting in writing: the neon section's stated working range tops out at 45°C ambient, which is marginal for an exposed southern aspect in a Qatari summer and should be confirmed for the specific orientation before it is repeated elsewhere.

Project scope
Signature masts are bespoke pieces, not catalogue items; stone cylinders along the kerb are traffic and security bollards rather than luminaires; façade and signage lighting belongs to each building
Colour temperatures
3000K across the pedestrian layer, warm against the cool white of the signature masts so the two read as separate systems rather than a mismatch
Protection ratings
IP67 on the stepped edge, where the fitting sits at ground level on a waterfront · IP65 on the ingrounds, in 304 stainless against a coastal atmosphere
Maintenance
Spike-mounted spots in soft landscaping rather than buried housings, so re-planting does not mean re-excavating; one bollard diameter across the route in three heights
