The Advantages of LED Lighting

LED technology moves so quickly that the word 'LED' no longer describes the range of products made for different uses. The main advantages over incandescent and fluorescent lighting, briefly.

Technology in the field of LEDs moves so quickly that we think it is important to look at the changes. The term "LED" is no longer enough to describe the wide range of products that have been made with different features for different uses.

In electronics, an LED is an optoelectronic device that uses the properties of semiconductor materials to turn the electric current flowing through it into light. Although the first LEDs were made in 1962, it is only in the last few years that technology has made it possible to use LEDs fully as a replacement for traditional light sources — which brings a lot of benefits.

The advantages of LED lighting

LEDs have several benefits over incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. We have compiled a list of the most important, including for use in potentially explosive environments.

1. Energy saving

Traditional incandescent bulbs use far more energy than LED lights. On average, LEDs last three to five times longer than fluorescent bulbs and give up to ten times more light than incandescent bulbs for the same energy.

2. Lower costs

The initial cost of switching to LED lights may appear higher than buying a standard bulb, but in the long run the lower maintenance costs and greater dependability save money. After more than 50,000 hours of use, the investment is more than worthwhile.

3. Mechanical strength

Because of their solid-state construction, LEDs are highly resistant to stress, vibration and impact.

4. Thermal resistance

LEDs combine high mechanical strength with resistance to high temperatures. They switch on instantly at full brightness, with no warm-up, and will start at temperatures as low as −40 °C.

5. Clean light

LEDs are safer because they give off no UV radiation.

6. Safety

Because LEDs are powered by low-voltage direct current, maintenance work can be carried out with far less risk.

7. Consideration for the environment

Lastly, a lighting system that uses less energy and lasts longer makes greater environmental protection possible.
